Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
